Yu, Following Former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol, Rises to 2nd Place
Ruling Party's Chu Mi-ae and Park Yong-jin Draw Attention with Gains
[Asia Economy Reporters Hyunju Lee and Chae-eun Koo] The 'Lee Jun-seok effect' is significantly influencing the approval ratings of presidential candidates within the opposition camp. Former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min, who is considered to be aligned with Lee Jun-seok, the leader of the People Power Party, secured 9.8% in the opposition presidential candidate suitability poll, ranking second after former Prosecutor General Yoon. Former Prosecutor General Yoon received 35.4%. Following were independent lawmaker Hong Joon-pyo (9.1%) and Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People’s Party (8.9%).
The strong performance of former lawmaker Yoo varied depending on respondent classification. While he ranked second among all respondents, he was only fourth when considering only People Power Party supporters. The People Power Party supporters overwhelmingly backed former Prosecutor General Yoon (63.2%) and placed lawmaker Hong in second place with 7.0% support. Third place went to Choi Jae-hyung, head of the Board of Audit and Inspection (5.8%), with former lawmaker Yoo ranking fourth at 4.6%.
Changes are also observed in the so-called 'Big 3' structure of ruling party presidential candidates including Lee Jae-myung, Lee Nak-yon, and Chung Sye-kyun. Former Minister of Justice Chu Mi-ae, known as a 'Yoon Seok-yeol critic,' and Park Yong-jin, a 1970s-born member of the Democratic Party, surpassed former Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun to rank third and fourth among Democratic presidential candidates. Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung is first (35.4%), followed by former Democratic Party leader Lee Nak-yon (14.6%). Former Minister Chu is third with 6.7%, Park is fourth with 6.3%, and former Prime Minister Chung is fifth with 5.5%. Former Deputy Prime Minister Kim Dong-yeon appeared as a candidate for both ruling and opposition camps, polling at 3.2% as a ruling party candidate and 2.3% as an opposition candidate.
