[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] A satirical depiction of the countries attending the Group of Seven (G7) summit as animals, titled 'The Last Supper,' has become a trending search term on Weibo (China's version of Twitter).
China's state-run Global Times reported on the 14th that since the 12th, an image parodying Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper, called 'The Last G7,' has been widely circulated across China via Weibo.
The satirical illustration is known to have been created by a graphic artist using the pseudonym 'Bantong Laotang.' The Global Times evaluated that the nine countries participating in the G7 summit were represented as various animals, reflecting the contradictory nature of these nations. South Korea, invited to the G7 summit, is not included in this illustration.
The Global Times explained that Jesus's face was replaced with a white-haired eagle symbolizing the United States, while the United Kingdom was depicted as a lion, Japan as a dog (Shiba Inu), Italy as a wolf, Australia as a kangaroo, Canada as a beaver, Germany as a black eagle, France as a rooster, and India as an elephant. The media interpreted that each animal satirized the respective country's politics, economy, and society.
Recently, implying Japan's national status, Japan was portrayed as a Shiba Inu serving others. This Shiba Inu holds a teapot marked with a radiation symbol and is pouring a green substance into a melted glass on the table. The glasses of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia are filled with the green substance, while those of Germany and Italy are empty. Italy, personified as a wolf, is making a gesture rejecting the green substance. This appears to mock Japan's discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant.
On the table, a printing press producing dollar bills from toilet paper rolls is depicted, and the kangaroo is shown trying to grab the pile of dollars on the table. The beaver, clutching a Barbie doll and looking respectfully at the white-haired eagle, seems to represent the current situation between Canada and the United States. The Barbie doll is presumed to be Meng Wanzhou, daughter of Ren Zhengfei, founder of China's Huawei. The Indian elephant wearing a turban is kneeling on one knee, pleading for something. Only the elephant's glass is yellow, which is presumed to be cow urine.
Under the table, a frog clutching money is struggling to climb onto the table. The Global Times added that this symbolizes Taiwan independence activists who obey the United States.
Meanwhile, the black eagle representing Germany is looking elsewhere, and the French rooster is depicted as pondering something.
