[AKYUNG Poll] People Power Party and Yoon Seok-yeol Both Rise... 'Convention Effect'

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Cheol-eung] In a public opinion poll reflecting the news of Lee Jun-seok's election as the leader of the People Power Party, the party's approval rating rose. Alongside expectations that former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol is about to join the party, his approval rating also increased. This is analyzed to reflect the convention effect brought by the emergence of a 30-something leader of the main opposition party and the anticipation for the "Lee Jun-seok + Yoon Seok-yeol" combination.

According to a poll conducted by Asia Economy through Win-G Korea Consulting from the 12th to 13th, surveying 1,017 voters nationwide aged 18 and over (100% automated response via mobile phone virtual numbers), party support was as follows: Democratic Party of Korea (32.8%), People Power Party (31.0%), People Party (6.7%), Justice Party (5.2%), and Open Democratic Party (4.5%). The People Power Party's approval rating rose by 2.3 percentage points compared to the previous survey (May 29-30), approaching parity with the Democratic Party. This survey was conducted immediately after the People Power Party's national convention on the 11th.

Regarding the question of the most suitable candidate for the next president, former Prosecutor General Yoon rose by 6 percentage points from the previous survey to 33.3%, ranking first. He was followed by Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung (28.3%) and former Democratic Party leader Lee Nak-yon (10.0%). In a hypothetical one-on-one contest between Lee and Yoon, Yoon's support increased by 3.3 percentage points to 48.4%, surpassing Lee (41.1%) beyond the margin of error. News that Yoon appointed a journalist as the spokesperson for his presidential campaign was first reported on the 10th, and this official start of political activity may have influenced the poll results.

Regarding recent news that the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) has begun investigating Yoon's case, more respondents viewed it as a "political investigation." 47.0% of respondents saw it as a "political investigation targeting a leading opposition candidate," while 40.1% viewed it as a "strict measure to correct prosecutorial abuse of power."

The response rate for this survey was 10.9%, and the sample was extracted using weighted values by gender, age, and region based on the resident registration population data from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety as of late January (cell weighting). The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
