Discussion on Stable Production and Supply of COVID-19 Vaccines and Mutual Cooperation on the Occasion of Attending the G7 Summit
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] On the 12th (local time), President Moon Jae-in met with Pascal Soriot, Global CEO of AstraZeneca, in Cornwall, United Kingdom. President Moon met with the AstraZeneca CEO to discuss stable cooperation on COVID-19 vaccine production and supply issues during his attendance at the Group of Seven (G7) summit.
The Blue House stated, "President Moon reviewed the achievements of cooperation that enabled South Korea to emerge as a global vaccine hub not only by improving the health of our people but also through technology transfer and production cooperation, and urged continued cooperation for stable production and supply of COVID-19 vaccines and in the biohealth sector."
President Moon said that AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine is significant as it was the first COVID-19 vaccine administered in South Korea in February. He expressed gratitude for AstraZeneca's cooperation in achieving the goal of vaccinating 14 million people in the first half of the year. He also requested cooperation to ensure smooth vaccine supply and administration in the second half of the year.
President Moon proposed continued cooperation on vaccine production and global supply, noting that AstraZeneca vaccines produced in South Korea are being supplied worldwide through the COVAX Facility.
The AstraZeneca CEO said, "By supplying COVID-19 vaccines made in South Korea quickly and fairly to 75 countries worldwide through the COVAX Facility, we have been able to fulfill AstraZeneca's commitment to equitable vaccine access globally," and expressed gratitude to the South Korean government for supporting the cooperation model.
The AstraZeneca CEO added, "Just as we have jointly responded to the threat of COVID-19 with South Korea's leading biohealth companies, which are gaining global attention, we hope to expand cooperation into more treatment areas such as kidney disease and cancer to provide greater benefits to patients worldwide."
