GS Retail is practicing environmental care by posting notices containing information on the implementation of transparent PET bottle separation and proper disposal methods at over 15,000 offline platforms nationwide, including GS25 and GS The Fresh.
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] GS Group has established an ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Committee for the first time this year. The ESG Committee, newly created under the board of directors of GS Corporation to strengthen responsible ESG management, is the first step following the launch last month of an eco-friendly council composed of Chief Green Officers (CGOs) from each affiliate, signaling the full-scale initiation of GS Group's ESG management.
In particular, to enhance the expertise of the ESG Committee, former Minister of Strategy and Finance and Deputy Prime Minister Hyun Oh-seok was appointed as the chairman, and Hong Soon-ki, President and CEO of GS Corporation, along with Kim Jin-tae, a former Prosecutor General and outside director, were appointed as ESG committee members.
The ESG Committee was established as a committee under the GS Corporation board of directors to respond to growing social interest and demands regarding ESG management and to clearly oversee ESG activities. It sets strategies and directions for ESG management, deliberates and approves policies, and oversees GS's practical ESG activities.
All GS Group affiliates are strengthening their eco-friendly businesses. GS Caltex plans to expand sales of eco-friendly products using natural raw materials and focus on eco-friendly management based on composite resins made from recycled plastic waste.
GS Retail launched a "Transparent PET Bottle Separation and Disposal" campaign at the end of last year, and GS Home Shopping plans to increase the application rate of eco-friendly packaging for refrigerated and frozen foods in TV home shopping from the current 70% this year. This signifies that all affiliates, from production to distribution and marketing, are strengthening eco-friendly management by reducing plastic usage.
Hong Soon-ki, President of GS Corporation, said, "We expect to further strengthen GS's responsible ESG management together with the eco-friendly council composed of CGOs from each affiliate."
