Coordinating Schedule for the Movie 'Broker' and Departing for France Next Month
Already Invited Five Times... This Time Also Promoting 'Emergency Declaration'
Actor Song Kang-ho will be the first Korean male actor to judge films in the competition section at the Cannes International Film Festival.
According to the film industry on the 10th, Song Kang-ho recently received and accepted an invitation from the Cannes Film Festival organizing committee to serve as a jury member for the competition section. He is currently coordinating the schedule for the film "Broker," directed by Hirokazu Koreeda, which is in production, and will depart for France next month. The list of jury members is expected to be officially announced next week.
This is the fifth time a Korean filmmaker has been appointed as a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival. Previous appointees include the late director Shin Sang-ok (1994), director Lee Chang-dong (2009), actress Jeon Do-yeon (2014), and director Park Chan-wook (2017). Song Kang-ho also starred in "Emergency Declaration," which was invited to the non-competition section on the 4th. He is expected to have a busy schedule balancing judging and promotion.
Song Kang-ho has already been invited to the Cannes Film Festival five times. His first connection was in 2007 with director Lee Chang-dong's "Secret Sunshine," which earned actress Jeon Do-yeon the Best Actress award. In 2009, Park Chan-wook's "Thirst" received the Jury Prize, and in 2019, Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" won the Palme d'Or, the first for a Korean film. Bong Joon-ho's "The Host" was invited to the Directors' Fortnight in 2006, and "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" was invited to the non-competition section in 2008.
This year's Cannes Film Festival was delayed by about two months due to the spread of COVID-19. It will be held from the 6th to the 17th of next month in Cannes, a resort city in southern France.
