[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 10th that it held the opening ceremony of Yonsei University Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Yonsei University Graduate School of AI aims to select 50 students annually and train them as master's and doctoral level experts with world-class research capabilities in the AI field. To this end, it plans to establish a curriculum that progresses from core AI theories to convergence education and continuously secure full-time faculty members with excellent educational and research capabilities to cultivate advanced talents.
Specifically, the core AI theoretical education consists of three pillars: fundamental technologies for advancing AI learning models, system design technologies for optimizing AI models, and advanced AI image, voice, and language cognition technologies. The AI convergence education involves 14 departments from other academic fields such as medicine, finance, engineering, and humanities and social sciences, operating programs to spread AI technology in each field. The graduate school will receive a total budget of 19 billion KRW, including 2 billion KRW annually for up to 10 years (1 billion KRW in the first year).
Furthermore, to support AI research and industry-academia cooperation, a large-scale AI data center will be established through a self-investment of 10 billion KRW, and various on-campus startup support programs and startup funding will be linked to support students' entrepreneurship and growth.
Cho Kyung-sik, the 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, “As AI is recently being utilized in all industries and triggering digital transformation, the demand for talented individuals with excellent capabilities is rapidly increasing.” He added, “We expect Yonsei University to contribute to accelerating the national digital transformation through world-class talent development and cooperation with the industry.” He also stated, “The government will strengthen support to ensure that excellent AI talents are supplied to the industrial field in a timely manner.”
The AI graduate school program started in 2019 and currently, 10 AI graduate schools and 4 AI convergence research centers have been selected and are operating. The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to newly select AI hubs in July to advance industry-academia-research cooperation and AI research and talent development systems.
