Cheongdam, Samseong, Yeoksam·Dogok Apartment District Unit Planning Zone Designation

[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] The Cheongdam and Dogok apartment districts will be changed into district unit planning zones?Cheongdam, Samsung, and Yeoksam-Dogok?to flexibly respond to changes in urban and social conditions.

On the 9th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government held a joint urban and architectural committee meeting and announced on the 10th that it had revised and approved the district unit planning decision to convert the Cheongdam and Dogok apartment districts into three district unit planning zones: ① Cheongdam ② Samsung ③ Yeoksam-Dogok Apartment (tentative name).

This decision was made to shift from a simple and flat basic development plan for apartment districts to a comprehensive and three-dimensional urban management tool, the district unit plan, in order to establish a sustainable urban management system. The apartment districts designated in the 1970s were removed from the National Land Planning Act in 2003 and have been operated under the Housing Act’s supplementary provisions, limiting the acceptance of modern urban demands such as permitting neighborhood living facilities within complexes.

Among the 43 complexes within the district unit planning zones, four complexes pursuing reconstruction (Sang-A 2nd, Gaenari 2nd, Cheongdam Samik, Eunhasu) are excluded. The remaining 39 complexes were completed after the late 1990s and are expected to be subject to application when reconstruction or other projects proceed in the future.

The city also plans to strengthen administrative functions by constructing a new, aging Gangnam-gu office building and establishing cultural facilities, as well as expanding social overhead capital (SOC) facilities such as performance, exhibition, seminar venues, and knowledge-based youth startup spaces.
