Army Battalion Commander and Three Subordinates Arrested on Sexual Assault Charges

[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] Amid public outrage over the death of an Air Force non-commissioned officer who was a victim of sexual harassment, a sexual violence incident has also occurred within an Army unit, and the military prosecution is reportedly investigating the case.

The Army Central Investigation Unit announced on the 9th that it has requested an arrest warrant for Lieutenant Colonel A, a battalion commander of a unit in Gangwon Province, on charges including violation of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes.

The military police of the division to which the unit belongs reportedly received a sexual harassment complaint from a female officer via the division commander's email on the 10th of last month and began an investigation.

Currently, the Army Central Investigation Unit is conducting the investigation, and at least three victims have been identified.

The Central Investigation Unit is known to be probing for additional offenses, considering that Lieutenant Colonel A holds the position of battalion commander, to determine if there are more victims.

An Army official stated, “Upon recognizing the report from the victims in mid-last month, we immediately took protective measures for the victims, including professional counseling, and took actions such as removing and separating the perpetrator from their post. Depending on the investigation results, strict measures will be taken in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.”
