Samsung Electronics is strengthening its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives to establish a foundation for sustainable management. Through various activities such as carbon reduction, resource circulation, and ecological restoration, the company aims to protect the environment, respect human rights and diversity, educate future generations, and create an inclusive society through technological innovation.
As part of its environmental efforts, Samsung Electronics is working to minimize environmental impact from product planning to disposal by improving energy efficiency, reducing harmful substances, and using sustainable materials. The company has significantly reduced plastic use in product packaging and introduced eco-packaging for TV packaging that can be recycled. Efforts for eco-friendly smartphone packaging have also continued, notably replacing plastic packaging for accessories with paper since the Galaxy S10 and simplifying packaging structures to reduce resource consumption.
Samsung Electronics achieved its goal of using 100% renewable energy at all business sites in the U.S., Europe, and China by last year. In Korea, it is promoting the expansion of renewable energy use through renewable energy generation facilities installed in parking lots, buildings, rooftops, and new construction sites at its Suwon, Giheung, and Pyeongtaek campuses.
For the DS Division, solar power facilities installed in parking lots at four sites?Giheung, Hwaseong, Pyeongtaek, and Onyang?cover a total area of 27,660㎡, approximately four times the size of a soccer field. The total annual power generation is about 2,847 MWh, which, assuming an average monthly electricity consumption of 350 KWh for a family of four, is enough to supply electricity to 678 households annually.
Samsung Electronics is also making various efforts to strengthen compliance management based on law and ethics. Through the Samsung Compliance Committee, established as an independent organization, it thoroughly manages risks related to compliance obligations violations. At the same time, the Compliance Team has been elevated to report directly to the CEO and supports important decision-making by the board of directors.
