[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] The number of daily new COVID-19 cases in India, which exceeded 410,000 last month, has dropped below 100,000 for the first time in two months.

According to Indian health authorities on the 8th, the number of daily new COVID-19 cases as of the morning was recorded at 86,498. This is the first time in two months since April 6th (96,982 cases) that India's daily new cases have fallen below 100,000. The number of new cases in the 80,000 range was last seen on April 3rd (89,129 cases).

Although the number of new cases remains the highest in the world, the explosive surge in COVID-19 cases since mid-March appears to be subsiding. India's cumulative confirmed cases were tallied at 28,996,473 on this day.

Local media reported that as the number of confirmed cases decreased, the shortages of hospital beds and medical oxygen have mostly been resolved.

The number of new deaths, which had exceeded 4,500 in late last month, also decreased to 2,123 on this day. The cumulative death toll stands at 351,309.

Major cities such as New Delhi and Mumbai are gradually easing lockdowns by reopening shops and resuming subway operations.

The number of new cases in New Delhi yesterday was 231. On April 20th, it had surged to as high as 28,395. However, while the situation in northern and western regions including New Delhi and Mumbai is calming down, the spread is still continuing in rural areas including the southern and northeastern parts.
