[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] KT&G announced on the 8th that it has donated 110 million KRW to the Ministry of Justice to support social settlement projects such as improving the residential environment of those under legal protection and horticultural therapy for patients under treatment and custody.
The donation ceremony took place on the 7th at the KT&G Seoul headquarters, attended by Lee Sang-hak, Head of KT&G's Sustainable Management Division (Vice President), Shim Young-ah, Head of KT&G's Social Contribution Office, Kang Ho-sung, Director of the Crime Prevention Policy Bureau of the Ministry of Justice, and Yang Hyun-gyu, Head of the Juvenile Crime Prevention Team of the Ministry of Justice, among other officials.
The donated funds will be used for a project led by the Korea Legal Protection Welfare Corporation to improve the residential environment of those under legal protection. This project aims to enhance the living conditions of vulnerable groups such as released prisoners and probationers to support their healthy reintegration into society, including renovations of old houses and the installation of study rooms for children.
The donation will also be used to establish horticultural therapy facilities and cultivation areas for horticultural crops at treatment and custody centers, which are inpatient treatment facilities under the Ministry of Justice. Through this, horticultural therapy programs such as plant cultivation and garden making will be operated to aid the effective treatment of patients, as well as contribute to the emotional stability and stress relief of nursing staff.
Since 1998, KT&G has continuously donated to the Ministry of Justice to support projects such as improving the residential environment of those under protection, crime prevention environment improvement projects, emotional stability and job creation support for at-risk youth. Earlier this year, KT&G also delivered 150,000 KF94 masks to correctional facilities to prevent COVID-19. Including this donation, the total amount KT&G has supported reaches 10.638 billion KRW.
Lee Sang-hak, Head of KT&G's Sustainable Management Division, stated, “KT&G has supported the Ministry of Justice's crime prevention activities for the past 24 years, and this time again, we continue our support to help vulnerable groups achieve stable social settlement. We will continue to make various efforts to assist those who are marginalized and facing difficulties.”
