Gallery Raon Hosts Exhibition Commemorating 100th Anniversary of Painter Lee Se-deuk's Birth Se-deuk Lee, 1972, Nirvana (涅槃) 72-35, Oil on canvas_45.0×38.0 cm (8).

[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] Gallery Raon announced on the 7th that it will hold a commemorative exhibition for the 100th anniversary of the birth of painter Lee Se-deuk (1921?2001), a pioneer of Korean lyrical abstraction.

Born in Seoul in 1921, painter Lee Se-deuk studied abroad in Japan and Paris, absorbing the trends of postwar abstract art in the international art scene. Based on this, he developed his own unique world of Korean lyrical abstraction. He was also active in the Korean Fine Arts Association, the International Plastic Artists Association, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Additionally, he served as the director of Seonjae Museum of Art (1991?1998), contributing to the development of the Korean art world through planning overseas exhibitions.

Painter Lee Se-deuk researched and experimented with various motifs such as Goguryeo tomb murals, traditional roof tiles, dancheong (traditional multicolored paintwork on wooden buildings), and obangsaek (five traditional colors) to pioneer lyrical abstraction based on Korean traditional beauty. Through this, he uniquely developed lyrical abstraction within the traditional Korean aesthetic.

This exhibition will reveal for the first time Lee Se-deuk’s research materials as well as various drawings and studies.

The exhibition will be held from the 11th of this month to July 8th at Gallery Raon located in Buam-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
