Capturing Every Heat 'Quantum Red'

Capturing Every Heat 'Quantum Red'

[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] Defense industry insiders unanimously agree that attention should be paid to Hanwha Systems' intelligent thermal imaging engine module, 'Quantum Red (QUANTUM RED).' It is a technology that integrates an infrared image signal processing system into a system-on-chip (SoC) that combines various semiconductor components into a single chip. It is the second in the world. Quantum Red is a core component of cameras that check heat and is applied to various products such as optical systems, detectors, and signal processing modules. Since it can process infrared image signals on a single chip, it is not only compact and lightweight but also has fast signal processing speed. Hanwha Systems plans to utilize it for defense surveillance cameras, temperature measurement, and industrial applications.

They have also filed a patent by reducing the temperature measurement error range to within ±0.3 degrees. By enhancing the temperature measurement reliability of thermal imaging cameras used for detecting human fever, which became an issue after COVID-19, they plan to enter various markets such as industrial sites requiring accurate temperature measurement, medical fields, and smart farms.

Hanwha Systems believes that by utilizing Quantum Red technology, the safety of future autonomous driving technology can also be guaranteed. They state that Quantum Red's precise temperature checking technology is sufficiently applicable to urban air mobility (UAM) autonomous driving.

Recently, Hanwha Systems signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for technical cooperation in air taxi infrastructure development with the UK urban air mobility infrastructure specialist company, Skyports. Skyports is a company that builds urban airports (Vertiports) where air taxis take off and land. Hanwha Systems plans to provide control technologies necessary for flight safety to Skyports. Additionally, the air taxi aircraft is being developed in partnership with Overair, a US personal air vehicle (PAV) specialist company, and plans to start pilot operations on the Seoul-Gimpo route in 2025. Hanwha Systems aims to achieve sales of 11.4 trillion won related to UAM by 2030.
