[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] SJ Power Co., Ltd., a small and medium-sized enterprise located in the Jeonui-myeon industrial complex in Sejong City, has delivered approximately 200,000 masks produced in-house from the end of last year to various vulnerable groups, including public senior welfare institutions, traditional markets, small business owners, and industrial complex workers, leading the pursuit of social values of coexistence and giving a small but touching example.
Additionally, on the 5th, SJ Power donated masks to the Gyeongju Golgulsa Temple, the headquarters of Korean Buddhist Seonmudo and a temple stay operator visited annually by about 7,000 foreigners, for events such as monastic examinations and advanced training for certified practitioners involving foreigners. To date, the company has donated about 10,000 masks to this temple, helping ensure safe event operations during COVID-19, promoting the development of Buddhist propagation as temple members, and raising awareness of the excellence of Korean masks among foreigners.
SJ Power was established in 2012 and had been managing comprehensive building maintenance and hygiene for public institutions and companies. In 2020, it established a factory in the Jeonui-myeon industrial complex to produce KF94 masks under the brand name Singgeurami.
Employing more than 30% of its workforce from vulnerable groups, the company prioritizes pursuing corporate social value through management. It has significantly improved its work system by changing from a three-shift two-team system to a four-shift two-team system, introducing a 14-day monthly work schedule to realize work-life balance and achieving a 25% employment creation effect, thus leading the practice of corporate social responsibility.
Moreover, certified as a social enterprise, SJ Power has laid the foundation as a company pursuing social objectives by providing jobs to vulnerable groups. Last year, it signed an MOU with the Korea Employment Agency for Persons with Disabilities and is currently promoting the establishment of a standard workplace for the disabled through factory expansion, offering opportunities for independence to socially marginalized disabled individuals. The company continues to grow as a specialized packaging and sales company for masks, tissues, and wet wipes.
Furthermore, the 'Singgeurami KF94 mask' produced by the company uses 100% domestically sourced, high-quality raw materials. The thermal bond nonwoven fabric used as the inner lining provides comfortable wear all day without generating harmful substances, making it highly favored by people with sensitive skin.
Also, by using a wet-type MB filter, the mask maintains its quality even with prolonged exposure to air or moisture during extended use.
Particularly, the company has focused on hygiene management during the mask production process by establishing a ‘thorough hygiene management system’ with a perfect cleanroom facility.
Equipped with cleanroom facilities exceeding 1,000 pyeong (approximately 3,300 square meters), including air showers, HEPA filters, temperature and humidity control devices, and air conditioners, the company maintains a high level of cleanliness with a Class 10,000 cleanroom. Before entering the manufacturing room, all workers undergo an air shower process that cleanses them with purified air to remove fine dust and harmful substances, preventing even the smallest contamination particles from entering the cleanroom.
Additionally, the company has introduced HEPA filters, high-performance filters used in sterile rooms and medical laboratories that remove over 99.97% of airborne particles sized 0.3 micrometers, producing masks of the highest cleanliness standards.
Furthermore, the company maintains strict hygiene management by separating manufacturing rooms, packaging rooms, raw material and finished product storage rooms, testing rooms, and clean rooms within the cleanroom. Workers wear hygienic clothing, caps, disposable shoe covers, and gloves before production.
As a result of these efforts, although the company entered mask production relatively late, it has received certification from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and passed the challenging NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, USA) certification, gaining increasing domestic acclaim for its high-quality products. Its excellence has also been recognized overseas, recently achieving the milestone of exporting to Thailand and Malaysia.
CEO Shin Hang-cheol, who leads the in-house volunteer group, fosters a culture where employees voluntarily participate in volunteer activities for vulnerable neighbors in Chungbuk, Daejeon, and Sejong City, such as elderly living alone and multicultural families, promoting communication through service among members.
Starting with a donation of 72,000 masks to workers in the Jeonui industrial complex at the end of last December, the company donated 50,000 masks to the Korea Senior Human Resources Development Institute in February, 50,000 masks for Sejong City’s aid to the underprivileged in March, 30,000 masks to the Eunpyeong-gu Senior Welfare Center, and 5,000 masks each to the Siheung Jeongwang Traditional Market and Eunpyeong Small Business Association in May, totaling over 200,000 masks.
Through this, the company has continuously delivered small warmth of love to vulnerable groups in various sectors of our society, such as the elderly who find it difficult to purchase masks due to worsened circumstances from the COVID-19 crisis and small merchants in traditional markets.
Furthermore, SJ Power states it will continue to take the lead in practicing a society where we live together in harmony.
