[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Sinan-gun, Jeonnam (Park Woo-ryang) announced on the 3rd that it held the opening ceremony of ‘Happy Jeonnam Cultural Branch, Sinan’ (abbreviated as Cultural Branch Sinan) at the Sinan-gun Water and Sewage Business Office located in Aphae-eup, aiming to provide cultural and artistic education and enjoyment for island residents and to establish a network of island regional activists.

At the opening ceremony, Park Woo-ryang, the governor of Sinan-gun, key officials from the Jeonnam Cultural Foundation, Lamong LCC, and island regional activists from Sinan-gun attended. The event started with viewing the special exhibition of the Netherlands’ CASCO Art Institute displayed in the cultural branch education hall, followed by the unveiling ceremony of the Cultural Branch Sinan signboard.

The ‘Happy Jeonnam Cultural Branch’ project has been operated for three years from 2020 to 2022 with support from the Jeonnam Cultural Foundation. The subsidiary operator, Lamong LCC, provides direction and plans and operates programs so that island residents, who have been marginalized in the cultural and artistic fields, can participate in or receive education through cultural and artistic programs.

Last year, Cultural Branch Sinan conducted the island culture and art pilot program ‘Island Village Art Museum’ education for Sinan residents in the Heuksan area and the central region, respectively, and worked hard to discover island regional activists.

This year, it plans to focus on cultural enjoyment through the utilization of local cultural assets based on the cultural branch education space and to promote mid- to long-term projects through cooperative relationships between local governments and local communities.

Kim Jeong-chun, an island regional activist who attended the event, said, “For a long time, it was difficult for island residents to access the cultural and artistic fields due to transportation and weather issues, but I have high expectations as Cultural Branch Sinan has opened its doors.”

Governor Park Woo-ryang said, “On March 18, we enacted the ‘Sinan-gun Cultural and Artistic Education Support Ordinance’ to establish a basis for support in the cultural and artistic fields,” adding, “I hope that ‘Cultural Branch Sinan’ will serve as a hub to facilitate easy access and expand participation opportunities in cultural and artistic fields for Sinan residents.”

Meanwhile, to create the space, the cultural branch education hall, which is equipped with marine fishing gear and daily tools from the island region as well as reference books, exhibited about 20 print works by Rwandan artist ‘Christian Niyampeta.’ The exhibition was curated by Choi Bit-na, director of the Netherlands’ CASCO Art Institute.
