[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] Pianist Kim Sunwook will make his debut performance in collaboration with the Berlin Philharmonic.
Concert planning company Vincero announced on the 3rd that pianist Kim Sunwook will perform on the 5th (local time) at 7 p.m. at the Berlin Philharmonie, the resident concert hall of the Berlin Philharmonic in Berlin, Germany. The collaborative program features Jin Eun-sook's Piano Concerto, one of Kim Sunwook's signature repertoires. Conductor Sakari Oramo, who is scheduled to visit Korea in December this year with the BBC Symphony, will join the stage.
Kim Sunwook gained international recognition by winning the Leeds Competition in 2006. At the age of 18, he became the youngest winner in the 40-year history of the Leeds Competition and the first Asian winner. Since then, he has been consistently invited as a soloist by major orchestras worldwide, including the London Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Hamburg Symphony, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and Radio France Philharmonic. In 2014, he made his debut at the BBC Proms with the Bournemouth Symphony. He regularly collaborates with conductors such as Thomas Sønderg?rd, Tugan Sokhiev, Edward Gardner, John Eliot Gardiner, Myung-whun Chung, and Sir Mark Elder.
This concert will be broadcast live worldwide on a paid basis through the Digital Concert Hall, an online streaming platform directly operated by the Berlin Philharmonic. It will start at 2 a.m. on the 6th Korean time.
Since November last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Berlin Philharmonic has continued live streaming performances without an audience instead of holding audience-attended concerts. This concert is the first of eight audience-attended performances scheduled throughout June. Following this, performances by Maestro Herbert Blomstedt, violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann, countertenor Philippe Jaroussky, and percussionist Martin Grubinger will take place.
Jin Eun-sook's Piano Concerto (1996?1997) consists of four movements. From the introduction to the final note of the last movement, the piano and orchestra are intertwined in an organic structure. The performance lasts approximately 25 minutes.
Jin Eun-sook's Piano Concerto was premiered domestically in 2008 through the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra's 'Ars Nova Series,' with conductor Stephan Asbury and pianist Vilhelm Latchoumia collaborating. It was also introduced in 2017 at the Lotte Concert Hall's planned performance 'Composer of Our Time Jin Eun-sook' with Kim Sunwook as the soloist. As for recordings, there is 'Jin Eun-sook: Three Concertos,' featuring conductor Myung-whun Chung, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, and Kim Sunwook. This album received the 2015 International Classical Music Award (ICMA) and was internationally recognized as the first Korean orchestra and Asian composer to receive the prestigious 'BBC Music Magazine Award.'
