Exhibition "The Banality of Evil" Held in Damyang, a City with Culture

[Damyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Damyang Haedong Culture and Arts Village will take time to reflect on the roots of evil deeds committed by villains in past history through its second planned exhibition of 2021.

Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 3rd that it will hold the exhibition "The Banality of Evil" at the Area Gallery of Haedong Culture and Arts Village starting from the 12th.

This exhibition was planned to start from a fundamental question about the roots of evil deeds committed by villains in past history, extending to international issues such as the Myanmar democratization movement.

The theme and title of the exhibition, "The Banality of Evil," is based on the meaning of "the banality of evil" that runs through Hannah Arendt's book "Eichmann in Jerusalem."

In other words, evil can arise in the ordinary form (banality) from the incompetence of human behavior. This does not mean generalizing absurd evil deeds, but rather approaching the current suffering and life with careful attention.

Through the perspectives of three invited artists (Kim Kwangrye, Seong Byeonghee, Choi Euntae), the exhibition aims to reflect on the situations of massacres in history, the relationships between perpetrators and victims in daily life, and furthermore, on our own violence as viewers observing these situations.

It also intends to induce vigilance about the inability or complete absence of reasoning under the violence of the system.

The exhibition can be viewed through the official YouTube channel of Haedong Culture and Arts Village, showcasing the installation process and key works, while on-site viewing will be limited to fewer than five people per exhibition hall in accordance with COVID-19 prevention guidelines, and will be operated under strict quarantine management.

Haedong Culture and Arts Village is closed every Monday, and exhibition viewing is available from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
