Gwangju City Implements 'Air Purification System' for Urban Railway Line 2

The Nation's First Full Vehicle Application... Installed at All 44 Stations

Gwangju City Implements 'Air Purification System' for Urban Railway Line 2

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 2nd that it will install the country's first fine dust reduction device for air quality improvement, the 'Air Purification System,' on all vehicles of Urban Railway Line 2 for the health of its citizens.

The Air Purification System consists of a pre-filter and a HEPA filter. The pre-filter removes relatively large dust particles of 5~30㎛, and the HEPA filter removes fine dust particles smaller than 5㎛.

This system manages the air inside the vehicles by reducing fine dust to meet the Indoor Air Quality Management Act standards: fine dust (PM10) below 100㎍/㎥ and ultrafine dust (PM2.5) below 50㎍/㎥.

Through the dual-installed filters, the system first removes general dust and fine dust, and secondly captures more than 95% of ultrafine dust, with two units installed per vehicle.

To meet indoor air quality maintenance standards at all stations, dust measuring devices on platforms are linked with the air purification system via automatic control, removing large dust particles over 30㎛ down to fine dust of 2.5㎛ in three stages to maintain comfortable air quality.

Completely sealed screen doors are installed on platforms to fundamentally block dust, foreign substances, and other pollutants generated from the tracks, and windproof doors are installed at station entrances to prevent fine dust from entering from outside.

Choi Byung-in, Head of Vehicle Equipment Division at the Urban Railway Construction Headquarters, said, "When Urban Railway Line 2 opens, it is expected to be used by about 230,000 people daily," adding, "We will strive to provide a pleasant environment for citizens by managing the air quality of vehicles and stations, most of which are located underground."
