'100 Years Forest Project' Conducted Since 2018... Absorbing Up to 1,500 Tons of Carbon Annually

[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Hanwha Hotels & Resorts announced on the 1st that it is strengthening ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management and taking the lead in creating long-term sustainable social value.

Hanwha Hotels & Resorts explained, "Our ESG management is based on Hanwha Group's social contribution philosophy of 'Together Far,' embodying our commitment to pass on a better environment to future generations."

A representative activity is the greenhouse gas reduction effort through a forest creation project utilizing owned assets. Hanwha Hotels & Resorts has been conducting the '100 Years Forest Project' since 2018, utilizing approximately 7.6 million square meters (2.3 million pyeong) of large-scale forest land in the Yangpyeong-gun area. This project aims to create healthy forests connected to the original forests and is promoted to expand public interest functions by integrating ecological research, vegetation restoration, education, and recreation.

The 100 Years Forest is evaluated as an activity with high future ripple effects and influence, and was recently selected as the only private business operator alongside local governments and public institutions in a government-supported public contest hosted by the Korea Forestry Promotion Institute. The company plans to register a total of 990,000 square meters (300,000 pyeong) of forest land as a greenhouse gas emission reduction site. This will continuously receive government support. Additionally, a forest restoration plan will be established for about 660,000 square meters (200,000 pyeong) of wildfire-damaged areas in Sokcho, Gangwon-do.

By the project's completion in 2027, the 100 Years Forest is expected to absorb up to 1,500 tons of carbon annually. This year, the company is working to reduce greenhouse gases by planting 20,000 trees, including fir, Aesculus, and mountain ash, which are known for their excellent carbon absorption and air purification effects.

Furthermore, the Plaza Hotel is implementing a green campaign to establish an eco-friendly lodging culture and reduce greenhouse gases by reusing towels and linens, and is conducting a Green Card campaign that provides minimal linen laundry only upon customer request. The hotel also participates annually in the 'Earth Hour' lights-off event. The hotel exterior signage is made with solar power generation facilities and used as an energy source. Eco-friendly carpets with air purification functions have been installed, and all materials used within the hotel are eco-friendly products certified with the HB mark (Healthy Building Material).

Regional win-win projects are also underway. Based on resorts and golf businesses located nationwide, the company plans to discover valuable local products and establish a win-win cooperation model using online and offline platforms. Through this, it aims not only to contribute to regional coexistence and economic revitalization but also to expand sourcing product services for local small business owners using Hanwha Resort’s online membership service (H-LIVE).
