[Asia Economy Reporter Seoyoung Kwon] A 55-second video that gained explosive popularity on YouTube has reportedly been sold for more than $760,000 (approximately 840 million KRW).
The ownership of the video "Charlie bit my finger - again!" which became a hot topic online, was auctioned as an NFT (Non-Fungible Token) and sold for $760,999. This 55-second video was uploaded to YouTube in 2007 and has recorded over 800 million views. This is the highest number of views among YouTube videos excluding music videos or advertisements.
The video features Harry, the 3-year-old older brother at the time, and his younger brother Charlie. The content simply shows Charlie biting Harry's finger multiple times, and Charlie making a face as if to say "stop." However, this short video quickly spread among netizens and became a kind of internet "meme."
The "Charlie bit my finger - again!" video was put up for NFT auction on the 22nd, marking 14 years since it was uploaded to YouTube. On the 23rd, a bidder named "3fmusic" won the NFT after fierce bidding competition. He also revealed plans to film a new version of "Charlie bit my finger - again!" with the Harry and Charlie brothers, who are now 17 and 15 years old, respectively.
NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token. It is a blockchain-based token that represents scarce online assets as digital tokens, each assigned a unique identification value, making forgery or exchange impossible. This is one of the biggest differences between traditional cryptocurrencies and NFTs. Unlike tokens such as Bitcoin or Dogecoin, NFTs have completely different identification values that prevent them from being interchangeable with other tokens.
Because of these characteristics, NFTs are gaining attention especially in content fields where authenticity or ownership is important, such as music, games, and videos. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey's first tweet was sold for $2.9 million, and the first album of the American rock band Kings of Leon was auctioned for over $2 million in an NFT sale.
Meanwhile, with the conclusion of this NFT auction, the "Charlie bit my finger - again!" video will only be available for viewing on YouTube until the 30th.
