[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jeong] Members of the cryptocurrency exchange Bitsonic have filed a complaint with the police on the 25th, claiming they are unable to withdraw the money they deposited in the exchange and accusing the exchange operator.
According to Daegun Law Firm, representing the complainants, 39 members of the Bitsonic exchange filed a complaint with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on the same day against the exchange operator Mr. A for charges including fraud, embezzlement, breach of trust under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes, and forgery of electronic records.
They claim that Mr. A deceived them by falsely stating that "(Bitsonic) is operated safely, and cryptocurrency and cash can be withdrawn anytime through this exchange," despite having no intention or ability to return the Korean won or cryptocurrency deposited by members to Bitsonic. The damages amount to approximately 6.16 billion won. Due to the volatile nature of cryptocurrency prices, the damage amount was estimated based on the closing price on the 11th.
They emphasized, "We request a seizure and search of Mr. A's accounts used in the crime and the accounts that received the deposits," adding, "To prevent further victims, arrest investigation and travel ban are necessary."
Meanwhile, the Songpa Police Station in Seoul has been investigating Mr. A since the end of February on charges including fraud.
