[Asia Economy Reporter Kum Boryeong] The candidate registration for the People Power Party leadership election, scheduled for the 11th of next month, has been completed. A total of eight candidates are vying for the party leadership.


According to the Central Party Election Commission for the election of the People Power Party leader and Supreme Council members on the 22nd, the registration for candidates closed at 5 p.m. that day, resulting in eight candidates for party leader.


Lawmakers Cho Kyung-tae and Joo Ho-young (5-term), Hong Moon-pyo (4-term), Yoon Young-seok (3-term), Kim Woong and Kim Eun-hye (first-term), former lawmaker Na Kyung-won, and former Supreme Council member Lee Jun-seok have all completed their registration as candidates for party leader.


Lawmaker Cho Hae-jin (3-term), who had announced his intention to run for party leader, registered instead as a candidate for Supreme Council member. Former lawmaker Shin Sang-jin did not register as a candidate.


The preliminary primary (cutoff) will reduce the number of party leader candidates to five. The preliminary candidates will hold a vision presentation on the 25th, followed by voting over two days on the 26th and 27th. Voting will be conducted with 50% from party members and 50% from general public opinion polls. On the main election day, the 11th of next month, the results will be combined with 70% party member votes and 30% public opinion polls.


For the Supreme Council election, which selects four members, ten candidates have registered: Lawmaker Cho Hae-jin, lawmakers Bae Hyun-jin, Lee Young, and Cho Soo-jin (first-term), former lawmakers Kim Jae-won and Jung Mi-kyung, Cheon Gang-jeong, chairman of the Gyeonggi Province Dental Network Committee, Won Young-seop, former deputy head of organization of the United Future Party, Do Tae-woo, chairman of the Daegu City Party Human Rights Committee, and Cho Dae-won, former chairman of the Goyang-jeong Party Committee in Gyeonggi Province.


For the single youth Supreme Council member position, five candidates have registered, including Lawmaker Lee Yong, Kim Yong-tae, chairman of the Gwangmyeong Party Committee, Kang Tae-rin, vice chairman of the Uiwang Gwacheon Party Committee, Hong Jong-gi, deputy spokesperson, and Ham Seul-ong, former vice chairman of the Central Youth Committee of the United Future Party.
