Securing Safe School Routes for 1,300 Elementary, Middle, and High School Students in Daebang-dong, Dongjak-gu

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Lee Chang-woo) has completed the ‘Yeonghwa Elementary School School Route Improvement Project’ to create a safe walking environment for students in the Daebang-dong area.

The area around 68-23 Daebang-dong, where the school route improvement project was completed, serves as a main school route for about 1,300 students attending Yeonghwa Elementary School and Yeongdeungpo Middle and High Schools.

The existing school route in front of Yeonghwa Elementary School was only 1 meter wide, and the access road toward Yeongdeungpo Middle and High Schools was narrow and steep, posing a constant risk of safety accidents for students commuting to and from school.

Since 2019, the district has promoted the project in cooperation with the school, Seoul City, and the Office of Education, and after gathering opinions from parents, began the full-scale school route expansion construction in October last year.

With a budget of 680 million KRW, the project included ▲ installation of a retaining wall in front of Yeongdeungpo Middle School (31m in length) ▲ expansion of the school route in front of Yeonghwa Elementary School to 3 meters ▲ expansion of the access road in front of Yeongdeungpo Middle and High Schools from the existing 9m~15m to 10.5m~19m, along with ▲ design pavement blocks on the sloped road (304㎡) ▲ new stairs (89㎡) ▲ pedestrian protective fence (19m) ▲ asphalt pavement (329㎡) ▲ anti-slip pavement (329㎡), completing all construction earlier this month.

Baek Won-gi, Director of the Road Management Division, said, “The safe school route improvement project has satisfied not only students but also nearby school officials and parents,” adding, “We will continue to discover and promote road improvement projects to enhance pedestrian safety and convenience.”
