[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] As 'home cooking' has become a trend due to COVID-19, interest in ventilation systems that prevent the indoor spread of harmful substances generated during cooking is increasing.

According to the Ministry of Environment, the concentration of fine dust in a typical household is usually 40㎍/㎥, but it thickens to 1580~2530㎍/㎥ when grilling meat or fish. These harmful substances generated during cooking spread not only in the kitchen but throughout the entire house. Especially these days, due to the influx of yellow dust and fine dust from outside and the operation of air conditioners because of the hot weather, it is difficult to open windows for ventilation, causing harmful substances to remain inside the house.

Recently, Kyungdong Navien's clean ventilation system 'Kitchen Plus,' a new solution to solve these concerns of home cooking enthusiasts and manage indoor air quality, is gaining attention. Kyungdong Navien had already captured consumers' hearts by launching the 'Navien Clean Ventilation System' in 2019 before Kitchen Plus.

The Navien Clean Ventilation System is characterized by having both air purification and clean ventilation functions simultaneously. The air purification function keeps living spaces always comfortable, and the clean ventilation function expels polluted indoor air outside while filtering incoming fresh air through a filter. It filters particulate harmful substances such as fine dust and various gaseous harmful substances in daily life, including carbon dioxide, radon, and volatile organic compounds.

Kitchen Plus, the upgraded version of the Navien Clean Ventilation System, inherits the advantages of the Navien Clean Ventilation System and is specialized in managing air quality in the kitchen and the entire house during cooking, when the most harmful substances are generated. Kitchen Plus's 3D air hood forms air curtains in three directions?both sides and front of the range hood?to block the spread of pollutants generated during cooking. At the same time, a specialized duct for kitchen-focused ventilation operates to simultaneously perform blocking, exhaust, and supply functions.

According to the 'Verification Research Report on the Effectiveness of Clean Ventilation Products for Fine Dust in Apartment Housing,' jointly conducted by Kyungdong Navien with Seoul National University, University of Seoul, and Pennsylvania State University, the total amount of ultrafine dust generated was significantly reduced when operating Kitchen Plus compared to operating general ventilation devices and range hoods during cooking.

When operating Kitchen Plus, the total amount of ultrafine dust in the kitchen decreased by an average of 66%, and in the living room by an average of 57%, compared to operating general ventilation devices and range hoods. The ultrafine dust concentration in the kitchen during cooking was maintained below 30㎍/㎥, and in the living room below 25㎍/㎥, keeping the overall indoor air quality at a consistent 'moderate' level.

Another advantage of Kitchen Plus is that invisible indoor air quality can be checked in real time through an air monitor. The air quality indicator lamp on the air monitor displays indoor ultrafine dust (PM2.5), carbon dioxide, and volatile organic compound concentrations in four color-coded stages, and integrated air quality status such as temperature and humidity can also be checked. The air monitor, which displays specific values for each substance, received a first-grade certification in the fine dust simplified measuring instrument performance evaluation conducted by the Korea Conformity Laboratories.

A Kyungdong Navien official said, "Since last year, the installation of ventilation systems in apartment housing with more than 30 households has become mandatory, increasing interest from construction companies and consumers in clean ventilation systems, thereby expanding the market size. While we focused on promoting Kyungdong Navien's clean system until last year, we expect to reap tangible results starting this year."
