Hope for Establishing a Culture that Respects the Rights and Human Rights of Multicultural Families
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] The "Ordinance on the Support for Multicultural Families in Gwangyang City" fully revised ordinance, which was proposed by Jeong Min-gi, a member of the Gwangyang City Council, was approved at the 2nd plenary session of the 298th extraordinary meeting.
This ordinance stipulates that the meanings of the terms "multicultural families" and "marriage immigrants, etc." shall follow the provisions of the 「Basic Act on the Treatment of Foreigners Residing in Korea」 and the 「Nationality Act」.
It also includes the mayor's responsibility to establish plans and promote policies and secure funding to create an environment for the stable family life and welfare improvement of multicultural families and to support related projects.
Furthermore, the ordinance mandates the mayor to establish and operate a Multicultural Family Support Center and allows for the delegation of the center's operation, with subsidies for operating and project expenses provided within the budget.
Councilor Jeong Min-gi stated, "Looking at the statistics on multicultural families and marriage immigrants, it is clear that our society has long been transforming into a multicultural society," and added, "I hope that a culture respecting the rights and human rights of multicultural families as members of the local community will be established."
