[Asia Economy Reporter Su-yeon Woo] Global companies and leading domestic firms Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor Company are joining forces to stabilize the supply of automotive semiconductors. Their cooperation will not only address short-term supply shortages but also involve long-term preparations to strengthen the supply chain for core components of future vehicles.
On the 13th, at Samsung Electronics' Pyeongtaek Campus, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor Company, Korea Automotive Technology Institute, and Korea Electronics Technology Institute held a signing ceremony to strengthen solidarity and cooperation among companies involved in the supply and demand of automotive semiconductors.
Based on this agreement, the companies and related institutions plan to establish a foundation for government, corporate, and institutional cooperation to respond to the global shortage of automotive semiconductors and jointly work toward proactive internalization of core semiconductors for future vehicles.

Through this, Samsung Electronics, a leading domestic semiconductor company, and Hyundai Motor Company, a leading automaker, are expected to strengthen cooperation for the supply and development of automotive semiconductors on a mid- to long-term basis. The two companies plan to identify jointly developed technology items with high applicability to mass-produced vehicles, such as next-generation power semiconductors, image sensors, battery management chips, and infotainment application processors (APs), as well as mid- to long-term joint technology development items like autonomous driving APs, AI accelerators, and communication processors for future vehicles.
In particular, with the government planning to establish a support system for 'full-cycle self-reliance' of automotive semiconductors by next year, expectations are rising that a public-private joint mid- to long-term technology development roadmap for automotive semiconductors will be released within this year.
Earlier in March, the government and companies launched a future vehicle and semiconductor solidarity and cooperation council. In the same month, five automakers including Hyundai Motor Company and Kia, eight automotive parts companies such as Mando and LS Automotive, and fifteen fabless companies including NeoWin, Billiv Micron, and Silicon R&D gathered for a technology exchange meeting.
