Last Year’s Heavy Rain Damage: 15 Local Rivers Receive 15.6 Billion KRW for Full Restoration Efforts
[Damyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] In preparation for the upcoming rainy season, Damyang-gun is accelerating disaster recovery efforts for local rivers damaged by last year's heavy rains.
Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do, announced on the 14th that it is carrying out disaster recovery projects by investing 15.6 billion KRW in national and local government funds to permanently restore 15 local rivers damaged by last year's heavy rains.
In August of last year, the Damyang area experienced record rainfall of up to 641.5mm, causing damage such as embankment washouts and facility destruction along 22.9 km of 15 local rivers, resulting in property damage worth 10.7 billion KRW.
Accordingly, the county undertook emergency repairs to prevent secondary damage to rivers and small streams, completing the first phase of restoration in November last year.
Subsequently, a rapid recovery plan was established and project funds secured, leading to the commencement of full-scale restoration work in April. The plan is to complete major construction phases as quickly as possible before the rainy season, focusing on the most vulnerable sections.
A county official stated, “We will make every effort to ensure the construction is thorough so that the permanent disaster recovery project can protect the lives and property of local residents in the future.”
