[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Yuri] Hyundai Department Store is stepping up to help local specialty product farmers and floriculture farmers whose sales channels have shrunk due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.

Hyundai Department Store announced on the 16th that it will hold a regional specialty product discount event called “Hyundai Food Hall Donghaeng” at the food halls of all 16 stores nationwide, including the Apgujeong Main Store, until the 10th of next month. The event is in collaboration with three local governments?Jangheung-gun, Wando-gun, and Seongju-gun?and six cooperatives including the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, the Livestock Cooperative, and the Fisheries Cooperative.

At this event, more than 10 types of local specialty products such as Hanwoo beef, chamoe (Korean melon), and abalone will be sold at a 10-40% discount off the regular price. A Hyundai Department Store official explained, “To provide some support to local specialty product farmers whose sales channels have decreased due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, we extended the event period by about 10 days compared to last year and increased the volume of products by about 20%.”

Hyundai Department Store will offer discounted sales of Jangheung’s specialty product, Hanwoo beef, until the 20th. From the 21st to the 27th, Seongju’s chamoe will be featured. From the 21st until the 6th of next month, abalone from Wando, Jeollanam-do, and freshwater eel farmed in Gochang, Jeollabuk-do, and Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do, will be available.

Meanwhile, this year’s event will also support floriculture farmers, whose sales have sharply declined due to the reduction of graduation ceremonies and local events. In partnership with the Korea Floriculture Cooperative and Bukyung Horticulture Cooperative, Hyundai Department Store will purchase a total of 200 bouquets of seven rose varieties including Hazel, Fuego, and Clarins, offering them at a 10-20% discount. The flower event will be held at Hyundai Department Store D-Cube City until the 20th and then at the Apgujeong Main Store from the 4th to the 6th of next month.

Im Hyuntae, head of the Fresh Food Team at Hyundai Department Store, said, “We plan to continue various efforts to support the expansion of sales channels for domestic agricultural, fishery, and livestock products.”
