Gwangju University Celebrates 41st Anniversary with Community Service Activities

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] Gwangju University announced that on the morning of the 14th, to commemorate its 41st anniversary, more than 120 participants including students and faculty members took part in the ‘1365 (A Good Day to Volunteer 365 Days a Year) Always Clear Day Project’ volunteer activity.

This volunteer activity was conducted at 18 bus stops in Nam-gu, Gwangju (from Gwangju University to Nam-gu Office) in collaboration with the Nam-gu Volunteer Center, involving cleaning, COVID-19 disinfection, campaigns related to climate change response and environmental pollution.

Additionally, participants made placards using recycled cardboard boxes, containing information on COVID-19 prevention methods and maintaining appropriate indoor temperatures, which were promoted to local residents.

In particular, at the Gwangju University entrance bus stop (in front of Hyodeok Elementary School), students personally handed eco-friendly paper bags containing disinfection supplies and drowsy driving prevention kits to bus drivers. The paper bags also included handwritten encouragement messages such as “Thank you” written by the students themselves.

Jung Jeong-hoon, president of the student council (Department of Sports Science, 4th year), said, “To mark the 41st anniversary of the university’s founding, we carried out volunteer activities to fulfill the university’s ideals and functions and to support local residents exhausted by COVID-19. Recently, due to the serious environmental pollution issues, we also promoted reducing carbon emissions and plastic usage.”

Starting with the bus stop volunteer activities, Gwangju University plans to continuously promote volunteer work for vulnerable groups in welfare blind spots through close cooperation with local governments, the Nam-gu Volunteer Center, and related organizations.

Meanwhile, Gwangju University, which celebrated its 41st anniversary on the 13th, originated from Gwangju Gyeongsang Junior College, founded in 1981 by Hosim Kim In-gon, who established Naju Yeongsanpo Middle and High School in 1970 and Gwangju Inseong High School in 1974.

After going through the Gwangju Open University and Gwangju Gyeongsang College systems, Gwangju University transitioned to a four-year general comprehensive university in 2004 and has firmly established itself as a university focused on employment and entrepreneurship.
