Seoul Metropolitan Health and Environment Research Institute Issues First Ozone Advisory of the Year... 17 Days Earlier Than Last Year

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] As of 3 PM on the 13th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Health and Environment Research Institute issued an ozone advisory for the Gangseo-gu monitoring station in the southwestern region, as the ozone concentration exceeded 0.120 ppm/hr.
This advisory was issued 17 days earlier than last year. The institute analyzed that the rise in spring temperatures likely influenced ozone formation. Ozone is a secondary pollutant generated in the atmosphere through photochemical reactions between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) under solar energy. Exposure to high concentrations can irritate the respiratory system and eyes, causing inflammation, and in severe cases, respiratory disorders.
To protect citizens' health, Seoul City conducts emergency duty and real-time monitoring of ozone levels every day, including weekends and holidays, from April 15 to October 15, when ozone concentrations tend to rise, preparing for the issuance of ozone advisories and warnings.
When an ozone advisory is issued, Seoul City disseminates the information via fax, phone calls, and text messages to related city departments, government agencies, media outlets, schools, and multi-use facilities, and sends text alerts to subscribers, providing warning details and citizen action guidelines.
Additionally, the status of ozone advisories and citizen action guidelines are provided on the official website, mobile platforms, and social media (Twitter).
