[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] Lee Kang-se, CEO of Star Mobility, a KOSDAQ-listed company, who is accused of embezzling company funds and pocketing tens of millions of won under the pretext of lobbying in political and governmental circles, was sentenced to imprisonment in the first trial.


The Criminal Division 11 of the Seoul Southern District Court (Presiding Judge Sung Bo-gi) sentenced Lee to 5 years in prison and a fine of 70 million won in the first trial on the 13th, on charges of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes (embezzlement).


Previously, the prosecution requested the court to sentence him to 8 years in prison and a fine of 70 million won at the sentencing hearing held on the 15th of last month.


Lee was indicted on charges of conspiring with former Chairman Kim to embezzle 19.2 billion won of Star Mobility funds by using them for the acquisition payment of the Veterans Association's mutual aid society, unrelated to company business.


He is also accused of receiving 50 million won and 20 million won respectively from former Blue House Senior Secretary for Political Affairs Kang Ki-jung and a prosecution investigator through former Chairman Kim under the pretext of requests.
