[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Amid difficulties in negotiations between the ruling and opposition parties over the adoption of the confirmation reports for Prime Minister nominee Kim Boo-kyum and three ministerial nominees, Yoon Ho-jung, the floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, indicated on the 13th that “no matter what happens today, the confirmation motion for the Prime Minister nominee must be processed,” suggesting the possibility of a forced passage.
Yoon, during the policy coordination meeting held at the National Assembly that morning, stated, “As the ruling party bearing infinite responsibility for the lives of the people, the Democratic Party will definitely process the Prime Minister confirmation motion today.”
He criticized the People Power Party, saying, “While blocking the appointment of ministerial nominees, they are completely obstructing the processing of the Prime Minister nominee confirmation motion,” and added, “Making the appointment of the Prime Minister, who will oversee the executive branch during the COVID-19 crisis, a bargaining chip is the height of irresponsibility by the opposition party.”
He continued, “The National Assembly has verified the candidates’ qualifications, abilities, and morality through confirmation hearings according to the procedures prescribed by law. However, the People Power Party unilaterally canceled the meeting agreed upon by the floor leaders last Monday, which was the legal deadline for processing,” and raised his voice, saying, “Since last Monday, I have earnestly requested the Speaker of the National Assembly and Kim Gi-hyeon, the floor leader of the People Power Party, to process this matter in six separate meetings, but the opposition party’s stance remains unchanged.”
Yoon criticized, “The People Power Party only talks about politics of communication but does not practice it. I want to ask what the People Power Party’s purpose is in obstructing the busy government’s efforts to overcome COVID-19 and causing a political vacuum,” and questioned, “Is the People Power Party truly on the side of the people or on the side of COVID-19?”
He then emphasized, “I also want to ask whether abandoning the legal obligations set by the legislature itself is what the People Power Party calls cooperation,” and stressed, “There must be no further political vacuum.”
