KT&G Challenges Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2050

Declaration of Carbon Neutrality by 2050... Full-Scale Launch of ESG Management

KT&G Challenges Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2050

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] KT&G will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030 compared to 2020 levels. By 2050, it aims to reduce emissions to '0'.

On the 13th, KT&G declared its commitment to achieving 'Carbon Neutrality by 2050' through reducing greenhouse gas emissions in response to the climate change crisis. Carbon neutrality means creating measures to absorb as much greenhouse gas as is emitted, effectively making the net emissions '0'.

First, KT&G plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030 compared to 2020. To achieve this, the scope of environmental responsibility will be expanded beyond business sites to the entire value chain, from raw materials to production and sales. The company will progressively promote the expansion of renewable energy, improvement of energy efficiency, and support for energy efficiency improvements in flue-cured tobacco farms. In the mid to long term, KT&G plans to participate in external greenhouse gas reduction projects linked with domestic and international value chains and strive to secure carbon emission rights.

Additionally, KT&G aims to reduce water usage by 20% by 2030 compared to 2020 levels and achieve a 90% recycling rate of waste by 2030 to accelerate the transition to a circular economy.

KT&G has disclosed this mid- to long-term environmental management vision on its official company website. This reflects the company's eco-friendly management commitment to minimize the climate impact of corporate operations and the entire value chain, spreading the 'GREEN IMPACT'. The goals were set based on the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and the international guidelines of Science Based Targets (SBT).

Meanwhile, KT&G is accelerating its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) enhancement through the implementation of environmentally sustainable management. Last month, the company joined the 'K-EV100' declaration, announcing plans to convert all approximately 1,200 company vehicles to eco-friendly vehicles such as electric cars by 2030, reducing over 20,000 tons of greenhouse gases.
