[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Choyoung] A group of scammers in the United States reportedly took 5.6 billion won worth of Dogecoin by using the appearance of Elon Musk, Tesla CEO who has claimed to be the 'father of Dogecoin,' on a comedy show as bait.
On the 11th (local time), according to the U.S. economic media Business Insider, blockchain information provider TRM Labs published an analysis report on Dogecoin scam cases containing these details.
According to TRM Labs, on the 8th, when Musk appeared on NBC's flagship comedy show "Saturday Night Live" (SNL), the scammers uploaded a live broadcast link on YouTube and said, "Musk is giving away 500 million Dogecoins, so take them," inducing viewers to access a specific site.
They then deceived those who accessed the site by saying, "If you send Dogecoin, we will return double," and as of the 9th, they stole 9.7 million Dogecoins worth 5 million dollars (5.595 billion won). Afterwards, they deleted the Dogecoin scam video from YouTube.
One victim left a message on the Dogecoin online board saying, "Don't be fooled like me. They don't return double coins," and "I only have 60 dollars left in my pocket."
On the official Dogecoin social networking service (SNS) on the 9th, a warning post was uploaded saying, "Do not send coins to anyone claiming to double or triple your Dogecoin," and "It is a scam. We cannot return your money."
Business Insider pointed out, "Many Musk followers expected his SNL appearance to cause a sharp rise in Dogecoin prices, but over the past weekend, the price fell more than 30%," and added, "Scammers led the Dogecoin community."
