[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Park Ji-won, Director of the National Intelligence Service, departed for Japan on the morning of the 11th to attend the trilateral meeting of intelligence chiefs from South Korea, the United States, and Japan.
Director Park will hold meetings in Tokyo with Avril Haines, Director of the U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), and Hiroaki Takizawa, Japan's Cabinet Intelligence Officer. This meeting is the first gathering of the intelligence chiefs from the three countries since the Biden administration took office and is expected to be an opportunity to exchange views on the Northeast Asian situation and the Biden administration's North Korea policy.
There is also a possibility that discussions on historical issues such as the Japanese military's comfort women and forced labor will take place. In November last year, Director Park met with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and conveyed President Moon's intention to normalize Korea-Japan relations.
