[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City announced on the 11th that it will conduct a contamination status survey by collecting soil samples from 85 locations in industrial complexes and areas near factories within the city and requesting analysis from the Daejeon Health and Environment Research Institute.
The survey will be conducted until November, during which each district will collect surface and deep soil samples according to contamination types. The Health and Environment Research Institute will test 22 soil contamination concern criteria items, including cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg).
The survey targets include 14 locations selected as priority contamination sources this year: three factory wastewater inflow areas, three groundwater contamination areas, 13 land development sites, and three old or abandoned gas station areas.
If the survey results exceed the soil contamination concern criteria, the city plans to carry out a detailed soil investigation to identify the contamination source, extent, and degree. If contamination is confirmed, the responsible party will be identified and ordered to carry out remediation to restore the site.
Im Muk, Director of the Environmental Greenery Bureau of the city, stated, “We will conduct a detailed investigation of areas suspected of soil contamination to prevent soil pollution and protect the health and safety of citizens from contamination.”
