[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] President Moon Jae-in said on the 10th regarding the pardon debate surrounding Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, "I will listen to many opinions from the public and make a judgment accordingly."
President Moon made this remark during a Q&A session with reporters after a special speech marking his 4th anniversary in office at the Blue House Chuncheon Hall. He said, "I have heard many discussions about pardoning Vice Chairman Lee. Not only the business community but also religious groups have sent many petitions requesting such a pardon." This is the first time President Moon has officially addressed the pardon debate that has recently emerged following Vice Chairman Lee's imprisonment.
President Moon stated, "The global competition in semiconductors is intensifying, and it is clear that we need to further enhance the competitiveness of our semiconductor industry." However, he added, "At the same time, we cannot ignore issues of fairness, past precedents, and public consensus." He continued, "Although it is within the president's authority, I do not think it is a matter that the president can easily decide at will," and added, "I will listen to many opinions from the public and make a judgment accordingly."
Regarding the discussions about pardoning former Presidents Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye, President Moon took a principled stance, saying, "While there are many opinions hoping for pardons for former presidents, there are also quite a few opposing opinions. There needs to be public consensus."
On the topic of pardoning former presidents, President Moon said, "The fact that the two former presidents are currently imprisoned is truly unfortunate for the country. It is regrettable. Especially since they are elderly and not in good health, it is even more heartbreaking. I am considering these points," and added, "I will also consider the impact on national unity, judicial justice and fairness, and public consensus as I make my judgment."
