According to Honam University on the 10th, the Honam University LINC+ Project Group and the Department of Future Automotive Engineering will hold a special lecture on the 12th at 2:30 p.m. in the small auditorium on the first floor of the IT Square on campus to help students understand autonomous vehicles, the culmination of 4th Industrial Revolution convergence technologies, and to share the experience and knowledge of Dr. Han Min-hong, who developed autonomous vehicles ahead of his time.
This special lecture, which will be broadcast live online through YouTube 'Honam University TV' for undergraduate and graduate students as well as general students and citizens interested in future automotive technology, will introduce Dr. Han Min-hong's 34-year journey in autonomous driving research and the future development direction under the theme of 'The Beginning, Present, and Future Development Direction of Autonomous Driving Technology.'
Dr. Han began his research after deciding to apply autonomous driving to the automotive industry, inspired by his participation in the development of an autonomous submarine while serving as a professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Texas A&M University in the United States.
While serving as a professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Korea University in 1993, he and his students created an autonomous vehicle at about 'Level 3' and achieved the world's first urban autonomous driving. In 1995, he also accomplished autonomous driving on the rainy Gyeongbu Expressway at a speed of 100 km/h.
Born in Imsil, Jeonbuk, Dr. Han graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, earned a master's degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Minnesota, a doctorate in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech, and served as a professor at Texas A&M University, Pohang University of Science and Technology, and Korea University’s Department of Industrial Engineering. After retiring from Korea University, he was selected as a 'Hero of Korea University College of Engineering.' He is currently active as the CEO of Advanced Car Co., Ltd., which develops autonomous vehicles.
On the 7th of last month, Dr. Han appeared on tvN’s 'You Quiz on the Block' special episode 'Magicians of Time,' where he introduced the process of successfully developing the world’s first autonomous vehicle alongside Yoo Jae-suk and Jo Se-ho, sparking national interest and attention.
