[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] Samsung Electronics announced on the 10th that it has donated 1,000 Galaxy Tab tablet PCs to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to support refugee camp youth who are receiving education in increasingly difficult circumstances due to COVID-19.

The donated Galaxy Tabs will be delivered to 15 schools and community centers located in the Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya to improve the poor educational environment. They are expected to be used to provide quality education to the youth.

Schools within the refugee camps, which had been closed due to the COVID-19 situation, reopened in January this year, but the schools and youth still lack proper school supplies and learning content for classes.

UNHCR plans to use the Galaxy Tabs donated by Samsung Electronics in its "Instant Network School" program, which supports refugee youth to receive education based on various digital programs.

Kakuma and Dadaab are among the oldest refugee camps in the world. As of January this year, about 380,000 refugees reside there, of whom approximately 160,000, or 40%, are children and youth aged 5 to 17 who need to grow up receiving education.

James Lynch, UNHCR Representative in Korea, said, "Samsung Electronics' support has improved the situation where one tablet had to be shared by multiple students," adding, "This support is an example of a global company leveraging its capabilities to exert positive influence, and we look forward to strengthening our partnership with Samsung Electronics in the future."

Kim Won-kyung, Vice President and Head of the Sustainability Management Promotion Center at Samsung Electronics, said, "It is meaningful to support refugee camp youth, whose difficulties have increased due to COVID-19, to continue their learning," and added, "Ensuring that youth are not excluded from educational opportunities and can receive quality education is essential for a sustainable future for all."

Under the CSR vision "Together for the Future! Enabling People," Samsung Electronics is carrying out social contribution and win-win activities focused on youth education, including the Samsung Junior SW Academy, Samsung Youth SW Academy, Samsung Dream Class, and Samsung Smart School.
