[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] LG Electronics announced on the 10th that it has obtained functional safety international certification for the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) front camera, a core component of autonomous driving.
LG Electronics' ADAS front camera received the international standard certification 'ISO 26262 Functional Safety Product' from the global testing and certification organization T?V Rheinland. LG Electronics explained that this is the first time the organization has granted the same certification for a core autonomous driving component.
Additionally, the development process for manufacturing this camera also received the 'ISO 26262 Functional Safety Process' certification. Following the Level 2 certification obtained in 2017, LG Electronics has now become the first in Korea to receive Level 3 certification. All electronic components developed according to this process will comply with the ISO 26262 standard.
An LG Electronics official stated, "The ISO 26262 certification is an international standard that measures the probability of accidents caused by component failures or errors in the development process and guarantees how functionally safe the components and processes are," adding, "This certification is becoming increasingly important as global automakers demand highly reliable autonomous driving components."
The ADAS front camera acts as the 'eyes' of autonomous vehicles by collecting traffic information in front of the vehicle through various sensors. It recognizes obstacles and assists with emergency braking when there is a risk of collision, automatically maintains lanes, and keeps a certain distance from the vehicle ahead.
Kim Jin-yong, Vice President and Head of LG Electronics' VS Business Division, said, "As a global Tier 1 automotive parts supplier, it took a lot of effort and time from our team to obtain this certification," and added, "We will strive to secure high-quality and productivity to become an innovative partner in the automotive parts industry."
