[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] A man in his 20s who risked his life to save a customer from being crushed by a car and ended up living with a lifelong disability has shown a composed attitude, saying he "does not regret" his actions at the time, deeply moving many.
On the 23rd of last month, Kwon Hyun-woo (28), who works as a contract employee at the NongHyup Central Association, saved a customer who was about to be crushed by a car in the company parking lot.
At the time, an unattended vehicle suddenly started reversing in the parking lot of NongHyup Bank Gyeonggi Sales Headquarters in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province. A startled female customer in her 50s urgently tried to push the car from behind, but it was to no avail. The customer was pushed about 10 meters and was eventually in danger of being crushed by the vehicle.
At that moment, Kwon, who was leaving the entrance for work, witnessed the accident scene and without hesitation, rushed in and pushed the customer to safety.
Thanks to Kwon’s courageous action, the customer only suffered minor abrasions. However, Kwon sustained severe injuries, including severed wrist nerves and broken bones, resulting in a lifelong disability.
Regarding the accident, Kwon said, "Honestly, I was too overwhelmed," and explained, "As soon as I saw her falling, I don’t really remember much after that." He added, "Even if the situation happened again, I think I would act the same way," and said, "I don’t regret it because she wasn’t hurt because of me," according to YTN on the 9th.
The company has provided Kwon with three months of paid leave and promised to assist with prompt industrial accident processing. They also requested the headquarters not to include the paid leave period in the two-year contract term. Additionally, they are considering awarding internal honors to give Kwon extra points for conversion to a permanent position.
Netizens who heard the story responded with comments such as, "The courage to not hesitate in an emergency is not something just anyone has; truly admirable," "I hope he receives good treatment so there are no aftereffects," "Wishing you continued success," "Someone who can do anything," "The world still seems like a place worth living," "I hope he definitely gets converted to a permanent position," and "A truly wonderful and admirable young man," showering Kwon with praise for his brave actions.
