[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] It is anticipated that Samsung Electronics will use batteries from a Chinese company in its next-generation foldable smartphones, the 'Galaxy Z Fold3' and 'Galaxy Z Flip3,' expected to be released in the second half of this year.
On the 7th (local time), IT specialized media SamMobile reported that Samsung Electronics will use batteries from the Chinese company ATL (Amperex Technology Limited) in its next-generation foldable phone 'Galaxy Z' series.
This is the first time Samsung Electronics will use ATL's batteries in foldable phones; previously, it used products supplied by Samsung SDI. SamMobile explained, "Samsung's decision to use Chinese batteries is aimed at reducing costs and diversifying its supply chain."
Samsung Electronics' decision can be understood in the context of making this year the inaugural year for the popularization of foldable phones, emphasizing popularization and diversification. Although this is the first time Samsung is using Chinese batteries in foldable phones, it has previously used ATL's batteries in mid-range lineups such as the 'Galaxy A' and 'Galaxy M' series, as well as in the 'Galaxy Watch' and 'Galaxy Buds.'
The Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3 are both expected to be unveiled in July. As related rendering images are gradually leaked and product specifications are becoming more concrete, the Galaxy Z Fold3 is expected to support an under-display camera and a stylus pen (S Pen), while the Galaxy Z Flip3 is expected to feature a larger cover display than before.
