[Asia Economy Reporter Buaeri] Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga stated on the 7th that "a safe event can be realized" regarding the issue of holding the Tokyo Olympics, which has faced calls for cancellation domestically and internationally due to the impact of COVID-19.
After deciding to extend the state of emergency declared in Tokyo and other areas until the end of this month, Prime Minister Suga said at a press conference, "I am aware that there are voices of concern among the citizens regarding the Tokyo Olympics," adding, "First, we will devote all efforts to preventing the current spread of infections."
He continued, "Regarding the hosting of the Tokyo Games, it is important to thoroughly implement infection control measures for athletes and event personnel to protect the lives and health of the public."
Prime Minister Suga explained that, in consultation with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), "we have been able to provide vaccines free of charge to athletes from each country," and "strict infection prevention measures are being considered, such as limiting accommodations and transportation to prevent athletes and event personnel from coming into contact with the general public and requiring daily testing."
He added, "I believe it is possible to realize a safe event."
Regarding criticism that vaccine administration is slow, Prime Minister Suga said, "We are aiming for one million vaccinations per day," and pledged to make efforts so that all elderly people aged 65 and over who wish to be vaccinated can complete their second dose by the end of July this year.
However, concerning vaccination for the entire population, he stated, "After promptly completing vaccinations for the elderly, we will expand to the general public," but did not specify a concrete target timeline.
