[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Chun-hee] The number of new COVID-19 cases in South Korea has remained in the 500s for two consecutive days.


The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) Central Disease Control Headquarters announced on the 7th at midnight that the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases increased by 525 from the previous day to 126,044. Among the new cases, 509 were locally transmitted and 16 were imported from overseas.


Of the locally transmitted cases, 64% occurred in the Seoul metropolitan area. There were 177 cases in Seoul (34.8%), 136 in Gyeonggi (26.7%), and 12 in Incheon (2.4%), totaling 325 cases in the metropolitan area.


Among other regions, Ulsan, where the UK-origin COVID-19 variant is rapidly spreading, reported the highest number of cases at 35. This was followed by 30 in Gyeongnam, 21 in Gwangju, 20 in Busan, 12 each in Jeonnam, Gyeongbuk, and Jeju, 9 in Daegu, 8 each in Gangwon and Chungnam, 7 in Daejeon, 6 in Jeonbuk, and 4 in Chungbuk. Sejong reported no new cases.


The weekly average of daily locally transmitted cases, a key indicator for adjusting social distancing levels, was 554.1, marking a decline for three consecutive days.


There were 16 imported cases, with 4 detected during quarantine and 12 confirmed in the community. Among them, 8 were Korean nationals and 8 were foreigners.


A total of 86,735 tests were conducted the previous day. At temporary screening clinics in the metropolitan area, 38,807 tests were performed, identifying 70 new cases, while 7,566 tests were conducted at non-metropolitan temporary screening clinics, confirming 12 cases.


The number of patients who have recovered and been released from isolation reached 116,022, an increase of 531 from the previous day. Among hospitalized patients, the number of critically ill cases decreased by 10 to 162. The death toll rose by 9 to 1,860.

Meanwhile, as of midnight on the same day, 41,965 people received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, bringing the total number of first-dose recipients to 3,608,616. Among them, 1,960,226 received the AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccine, and 1,648,390 received the Pfizer vaccine. The vaccination rate relative to the population is 7.0%.


The number of people who completed the second dose increased by 73,491 from the previous day to 397,190. The vaccination rate for the second dose relative to the population is 0.8%.


The number of suspected adverse reaction reports increased by 611 to a total of 18,871 cases.


Four additional death reports were recorded. Three had received the AZ vaccine, and one had received the Pfizer vaccine. This brings the total number of deaths reported after COVID-19 vaccination to 92.


Additionally, four new cases of suspected anaphylaxis were reported, and 37 cases of major adverse reactions such as neurological symptoms, intensive care unit admission, and life-threatening conditions were added.


The remaining 566 cases involved common post-vaccination symptoms such as muscle pain, headache, fever, chills, and nausea.
