Excellent Korean Exhibitions and Performances Held in South Africa, the UK, and the Netherlands
[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 7th that it will promote the '2021 Traveling Korean Arts' project in a total of 14 countries until early next year in collaboration with the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange.
Started in 2015, the 'Traveling' project is a program that collaborates with overseas Korean Cultural Centers and foreign cultural and artistic institutions to perform and exhibit outstanding domestic works tailored to local demand abroad.
The first project this year is the 'Real DMZ Project' exhibition, which will be held in South Africa starting on the 8th. The exhibition will display works for three months in South Africa's largest outdoor sculpture park, covering a total area of 300,000㎡ (approximately 90,000 pyeong). Notably, this exhibition is significant as it is the first joint support with overseas partner institutions since the launch of the 'Traveling' project. A South African exhibition planner who visited Korea in 2018 through the 'Traveling Korean Arts Plus' project, which invites overseas cultural and artistic experts to Korea, is in charge of the local planning.
The Seoul Museum of Photography will also hold the touring photo exhibition 'Living in Seoul.' This photo exhibition was previously held in Hong Kong in January and Belgium in April this year. In June, in Shanghai, China, visitors can see the craft exhibition 'Living by Design' by the Soluna Art Group, which modernly inherits and develops Korean traditions. This exhibition will also be held in Hong Kong in January 2022.
Additionally, exhibitions such as 'That House' by the OCI Museum of Art, 'Decoration, Conveyed through Hats' by the Koreana Museum of Cosmetics, and 'Ogamdo' by A-Lounge will continue in various countries.
Following the exhibitions, overseas performances are also planned. The creative gugak (traditional Korean music) group 'Black String' plans to tour five countries?Russia, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the United States?while strictly adhering to each country's COVID-19 prevention guidelines. If in-person performances are not possible, they will be conducted online.
The online project, which started last year, will continue as well. The Korean contemporary dance company 'Ninety9 Art Company' will have its performance 'Abyss' broadcast on Brazil's SESC TV around September. SESC TV is a channel operated by SESC, Brazil's largest cultural institution supported by Brazilian commercial organizations.
A Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism official stated, "Due to COVID-19, cultural and artistic organizations worldwide, including performance venues and museums, are going through difficult times. We hope the Traveling project can revitalize culture and arts and encourage international cultural exchange."
