[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] One person jumped into the sea to escape a drunk driving checkpoint, while another passenger fled by land. The driver who jumped toward the waves, known as the ‘Marine Boy,’ was revealed to be a maritime police officer.
The Busan Maritime Police Agency has suspended the maritime police officer who fled the drunk driving checkpoint and will decide the level of disciplinary action once the investigation results are out.
According to the Busan Police Agency on the 6th, at around 10:39 p.m. on the 5th, police from the Yeongdo Police Station conducting a drunk driving checkpoint at an intersection in Yeongdo-gu, Busan, noticed a passenger car reversing.
The police suspected the driver was trying to evade the checkpoint and pursued the vehicle. The driver, Mr. A, stopped the car about 300 meters from the checkpoint and got out.
While the police were verifying his identity, Mr. A suddenly jumped into the nearby sea, starting a nighttime ‘escape drama’ in the water. Another passenger who was with him took the opportunity to flee by land.
Instead of patrol cars, three maritime police vessels and detectives searched the sea late at night, but failed to capture him.
In the early hours of the 6th, the police confirmed that Mr. A had purchased slippers at a nearby convenience store. After confirming his identity and calling him, Mr. A voluntarily appeared for questioning at 3:30 a.m.
Mr. A was confirmed to be a maritime police officer affiliated with the Busan Maritime Police Agency. The other passenger who fled at the scene (male) was determined not to be a maritime police employee. The police plan to summon the passenger for questioning as well.
The police explained that the blood alcohol concentration of Mr. A, who was caught after five hours, was measured below the legal limit.
However, since he jumped into the cold sea water which likely sobered him up, and the measurement was taken a considerable time after the incident, the police plan to apply the Widmark formula to estimate his blood alcohol concentration by considering the initial measurement, amount of alcohol consumed, elapsed time since drinking, and other circumstances.
