[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] The 'Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Autonomous Police Committee,' which will command and supervise the autonomous police of Jeju Island where the country's only dual autonomous police system is implemented, has been launched.
Jeju Province held the inauguration ceremony of the Jeju Autonomous Police Committee at 11 a.m. on the 6th. Governor Won Hee-ryong and Commissioner General Kim Chang-ryong of the National Police Agency attended the ceremony.
The first chairman appointed was Kim Yong-gu, former Director of Planning and Coordination Office of Jeju Province. Chairman Kim held the first meeting that day to deliberate and approve the agenda for electing standing committee members.
The Jeju Autonomous Police Committee will command and supervise the autonomous police affairs of the Jeju Police Agency, including community safety, local traffic, and child and youth matters, as well as the Jeju Autonomous Police Corps. During the pilot operation period until the end of June, they will complete tasks such as staffing the secretariat, preparing regulations for committee operation, dividing duties between the Jeju Autonomous Police Corps and Jeju Police Agency, and establishing the committee's role, and will fully implement the autonomous police system in July.
Governor Won Hee-ryong said at the inauguration ceremony, "I consider it meaningful to operate the nation's only dual autonomous police system, and I ask that you play a pioneering role in the nationwide introduction of a complete dual autonomous police system by prioritizing safety and convenience for residents and tourists visiting Jeju."
Commissioner General Kim Chang-ryong also said, "Since the Jeju Autonomous Police Committee commands and supervises both the Chief of Jeju Police Agency and the Chief of Jeju Autonomous Police Corps, its role and responsibility are even greater. I hope Chairman Kim Yong-gu and the other members actively gather opinions from Jeju residents and carefully reflect policies that meet their expectations, and the National Police Agency will provide the best support."
