SK Gas Launches 'Stop' Campaign for Children's School Vehicles

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] SK Gas Co., Ltd. has taken on the role of guardian for children's commuting safety.

On the afternoon of the 3rd, SK Gas announced that it held a business agreement ceremony for the children's school commute vehicle "Stop" campaign at the SK Gas headquarters located in Pangyo, together with Hyundai Motor Company, Gyeonggi Province, Korea Transportation Safety Authority, and Green Umbrella Children’s Foundation.

Under the slogan "I Always Protect," this campaign, led by SK Gas, was planned to reduce accidents related to children's school commute vehicles that occur every year and to protect children's commuting safety through improving driver awareness. It is scheduled to run for about six months from May 3 to the end of October this year.

Article 51 of the Road Traffic Act, revised in 2015, stipulates that "When a children's school bus is stopped on the road and the flashing lights or other devices indicating that children or infants are boarding or alighting are operating, drivers traveling in the lane where the school bus is stopped and the adjacent lane must stop temporarily before reaching the school bus, confirm safety, and then proceed slowly." However, in reality, this is rarely observed, resulting in continuous fatal accidents involving children every year. As of 2019, 13 children died in accidents related to children's school commute vehicles.

Through this campaign, SK Gas plans to improve drivers' awareness by promoting regulations related to children's school commute vehicle safety that have not been properly followed so far, and to ensure the safety of children's commuting. Additionally, by cooperating with various organizations, they aim to expand the campaign nationwide and create an environment where all children in the country can live safely.

Meanwhile, the government has been supporting the conversion of children's school commute vehicles to eco-friendly LPG fuel for children's health and has implemented policies such as prohibiting the use of diesel in newly registered children's school commute vehicles from April 2023 through legislative amendments. SK Gas, as a fuel supplier for school commute vehicles directly related to children's health, is committed to the success of this campaign for children's safety with a strong sense of responsibility.

Detailed information about the children's school commute vehicle "Stop" campaign conducted by SK Gas can be found on the websites of cooperating organizations such as the Korea Transportation Safety Authority and Green Umbrella Children’s Foundation, as well as on the campaign website, which will open from May 17.
