[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The 2nd Truth and Reconciliation Commission for the Past Affairs (Truth and Reconciliation Commission) announced on the 30th that Song Sanggyo, former Secretary General of the Lawyers for a Democratic Society (Minbyun), has been appointed as the Secretary General. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission added that Secretary General Song began his duties on the same day, about five months after the commission's launch.
Secretary General Song graduated from Seoul National University Law School in 1996, passed the 44th Judicial Examination, and has worked as a lawyer. He has held positions such as ▲ Specialist Member of the National Human Rights Commission's Mental Disability Human Rights Committee (2006?2008) ▲ Member of the Ministry of Justice's Prosecution Past Affairs Committee (2017) ▲ Secretary General of the Lawyers for a Democratic Society (2018) ▲ Human Rights Commissioner of the Korean Bar Association (2019).
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission described Secretary General Song as "having extensive expertise and experience in past affairs and human rights in general, and particularly contributing to uncovering the truth of past affairs and human rights violations by handling cases such as the forged will incident, the fabricated espionage case involving Korean residents in Japan, lawsuits for state compensation for illegal police arrests, and state compensation cases for military death non-notification."
